Mental Health Q & A

How do you define mental health?

Mental health is the sum of your psychological, emotional, and social well-being. It affects your mood and the way you think and act. When you’re mentally healthy, you:

  • Realize your abilities and potential
  • Can cope with the stresses of normal life
  • Can be productive
  • Contribute to the well-being of your community

Countless people around the world, however, don’t live with ideal mental health. Mental health problems are extremely common, and can ebb and flow throughout your life.

Poor mental health looks different for everyone, but it does have many common warning signs. If you notice any of the following in yourself or the behavior of a loved one, you or they may be struggling with deteriorating mental health:

  • Overeating or undereating
  • Sleeping too much or not getting enough sleep
  • Feeling like nothing matters or feeling numb
  • Low or no energy
  • Unexplained aches and pains
  • Inability to complete daily tasks at home or at work
  • Getting into fights with family and friends
  • Thoughts of harming yourself or others
  • Feeling hopeless or helpless
  • Extreme mood swings that disrupt your relationships
  • Feeling on edge, anxious, worried, confused, forgetful, or fearful
  • Increasing drug or alcohol usage

It’s important to understand that if you’re experiencing some of these symptoms, you’re not alone. In fact, in 2014 one out of every ten American adults experienced some type of mental health issue.

How do you treat mental health issues?

Dr. Hussaini at The Doc’s Here is committed to helping patients of all walks of life get the help they need to live a healthy and happy life. She meets you where you are and supports you throughout your mental health journey with strategies tailored to your exact needs.

Dr. Hussaini is available to patients via phone and text in times of need or concern. Giving patients ample time to discuss all their issues is of the utmost importance to her, and giving patients reassurance is her focus.

Typically, mental health treatment involves some sort of therapy and/or medication. Often, The Doc’s Here signs clearances for patients who need a service animal. They will also help children with ADHD by giving them a sense of responsibility with the animal and showing them what they can do.

How your team approaches your care depends on your specific struggles and history. Some of the most common mental health illnesses that The Doc’s Here treats include:

PTSD

PTSD, or post-traumatic stress disorder, occurs after you live through or witness a traumatic event, such as a natural disaster, war, a bad accident, physical abuse, or rape. PTSD makes you feel afraid and stressed even after you’re no longer in danger.

Depression

Depression is a mood disorder. It causes sadness, as well as other symptoms like fatigue, sleep disruptions, and loss of interest in activities you used to enjoy.

Anxiety

Anxiety disorders cause irrational fear and dread. They manifest in a variety of different ways, such as the symptoms you see in panic disorders, OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder), and generalized anxiety disorder.

Dementia

Dementia refers to the loss of memory, problem-solving skills, thinking abilities, and language abilities associated with any disease that causes abnormal brain changes.

What causes mental health issues?

Factors that affect your mental health include:

  • Biology (brain chemistry, genes, etc.)
  • Socioeconomic stressors
  • Personal history of trauma (sexual abuse, childhood abuse, etc.)
  • Family history of mental illness

Despite outdated narratives to the contrary, poor mental health is not a sign of weakness or laziness, nor is it anything to be ashamed of. With the right support, you can conquer your mental health struggles and live a full life.

Dr. Hussaini knows that mental health care is very expensive. She wants all patients to feel comfortable seeing her, regardless of their financial situation. She will work with them to find a solution that works, along with providing assurance that everything is going to be alright.
